For school IT admins

Allow SparkMentor in Google Workspace for Education

Google Workspace for Education blocks third-party apps for students under 18 until a domain admin allows them. If your students see “blocked by your administrator” when they connect Google Classroom to SparkMentor, these steps let them in. SparkMentor is a study tutor: it only reads a student’s own classes and work, and never changes anything in Classroom or Drive.

SparkMentor’s OAuth client ID

822995902186-pa9dtkn9ucqd4ant3847m5elb3r85q8j.apps.googleusercontent.com

Search for this ID in the Admin console when you configure the app.

Steps in the Google Admin console

  1. 1Sign in to the Google Admin console with an administrator account, then go to Security → Access and data control → API controls.
  2. 2Choose Manage third-party app access, then Configure new app.
  3. 3Search for SparkMentor’s client ID (above) and select SparkMentor.
  4. 4Choose the organisational units or groups of the students who should be able to use it.
  5. 5Set access to Trusted, or to Limited and allow the scopes listed below. Changes can take a few minutes to reach students.

What SparkMentor reads

Read-only, and only for the student who connects:

  • The classes the student takes (only classes where they are a student).

    https://www.googleapis.com/auth/classroom.courses.readonly

  • The student’s own coursework: assignments, due dates, points, their own submission status and returned grades. Never other students’ work.

    https://www.googleapis.com/auth/classroom.coursework.me.readonly

  • Class materials the teacher posts.

    https://www.googleapis.com/auth/classroom.courseworkmaterials.readonly

  • Class announcements.

    https://www.googleapis.com/auth/classroom.announcements.readonly

  • Class topics that group the coursework.

    https://www.googleapis.com/auth/classroom.topics.readonly

  • Only the Drive files the student picks with the Google file picker, nothing else in their Drive.

    https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file

  • Which Google account is connected (its email address), shown to the student as “Connected as”.

    openid, https://www.googleapis.com/auth/userinfo.email

Not requested: rosters, the student’s whole Drive, and any teacher or write access.
